Ashley Batastini is an Associate Professor in the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science at Swinburne University of Technology. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Texas Tech University in the United States in 2015. Her work focuses on developing novel intervention strategies for higher-risk populations, improving access to appropriate interventions at various stages of criminal legal involvement, and addressing systemic factors within the carceral setting that can diminish the efficacy of interventions. Her research often considers ways to integrate technology into forensic and correctional mental health services. Beyond her research interests, Dr. Batastini has clinical expertise in conducting forensic mental health evaluations.
Dr. Lauren Stossel completed medical school at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, residency training in Psychiatry at Weill Cornell, and a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at NYU. In 2018, she began working on Rikers Island, New York City's jail complex, as a supervising psychiatrist on a specialized unit housing individuals with serious mental illness who commit violent infractions in the jail setting. For six years, she worked in a variety of capacities with Correctional Health Services, including as a Senior Psychiatrist in general population clinics and specialty therapeutic units for seriously mentally ill patients, Director of Psychiatric Education, Medical Director for Mental Health, and most recently as Chief of Mental Health. In 2024, Dr. Stossel transitioned to Kings County Hospital where she now pilots an outpatient clinic focused on treatment of individuals with chronic psychotic disorders. She also completes forensic psychiatric assessments in private practice.
Sarah Miller, PhD, ABPP is board certified in forensic psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. She is the Director of Maine’s State Forensic Service and the Training Director for the University of Maine Postdoctoral Fellowship in Forensic Psychology. She conducts criminal forensic mental health evaluations, provides consultation to examiners, attorneys, judges, and clinicians, and delivers trainings to clinical and legal audiences statewide. She also serves as the Vice Chair of the Forensic Division of the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD). She previously worked with the Behavioral Health team in the Maine Department of Corrections in a variety of clinical, supervisory, and administrative roles.
Dr. Nicole Bartholomew is a licensed psychologist who obtained her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas Tech University and has over 10 years of experience providing mental health services to incarcerated adults in the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Dr. Bartholomew is currently the Internship Program Coordinator at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Fort Worth, Texas where she supervises doctoral psychology interns and provides a variety of mental health services, including trauma-focused individual and group treatment, to incarcerated adults. Prior to her current role, Dr. Bartholomew was the coordinator of an intensive trauma treatment program at the only female medical center in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, FMC Carswell.
Dr. Eman Tadros is an Assistant Professor at Syracuse University in the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and AAMFT Approved Supervisor. She is the Assistant Editor for the journal Child: Care, Health and Development. Her research focuses on incarcerated couples and families, dating and relationships, and culturally informed treatment. She has published 148 peer reviewed journal articles and various magazines, blog posts, book chapters, op-eds, and policy briefs.
Dr. Alix M. McLearen is a clinical psychologist, retired federal law enforcement officer, and experienced executive. Her expertise in corrections and leadership is derived from decades of government service with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She served as the agency's first national administrator for women and special populations then went on to oversee BOP's Reentry Services Division, ensuring intervention, education, and transition services across 122 facilities and 200 hundred community reentry centers. In 2022, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Dr. McLearen to lead the National Institute of Corrections. In this role she led the advancement of public safety by shaping and enhancing correctional policies and practices across 750,000 professionals in local, state, and federal systems. As the CEO of AMM Solutions, LLC she now serves as an expert witness and consultant.
Dr Nixon has worked across many large research projects in both health and forensic research areas. She has extensive experience in conducting interviews with vulnerable populations (i.e. individuals with dementia, mental illness and histories of trauma). She is a lecturer in forensic behavioural science at the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science, Swinburne University of Technology, and has particular expertise in the management of sensitive information, data linkage methodologies, qualitative research and service evaluations. Her research interests include cognitive impairments in offending populations, intellectual disability, dual disability, prison-based interventions and the intersection between offending and victimisation.
Jennifer Eno Louden, Ph.D. is a Professor of Psychology at The University of Texas at El Paso where she leads the Mental Health and Criminal Justice Lab. Her research draws on clinical, social, and correctional psychological methods to identify best practices in the criminal legal system for the assessment and treatment of underserved justice-involved people, particularly people with mental illness. Dr. Eno Louden’s past research has focused on topics such as mental health screening in corrections settings, community corrections supervision for clients with mental illness, and the stigma of mental illness and criminal legal involvement. In 2019, Dr. Eno Louden won the best paper award from the journal Psychological Services. Dr. Eno Louden’s research has been funded by the National Institute of Justice and the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, among others. She has chaired both the Corrections Committee and the Professional Development of Women Committee of the American Psychology-Law Society. She currently serves as the representative from the American Psychological Association's Division 18 (Psychologists in Public Service) to the APA Science Directorate and as an associate editor for Criminal Justice and Behavior.
Johanna Folk, PhD (she/they) is a licensed clinical psychologist, Assistant Professor, Associate Director of the Juvenile inJustice Behavioral Health Lab, and the Director of Research, Evaluation and Analysis in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. Dr. Folk's research and clinical work focus on addressing the behavioral health needs of youth and families impacted by the legal system. She uses community engaged and longitudinal research methods to understand the effects of adverse childhood experiences and legal system contact on adolescent trajectories, as well as participatory co-design methods to develop and evaluate technology-based interventions
Tamara Kang received her M.A. in Clinical Psychology, Ph.D. in Legal Psychology, and Quantitative Certificate from The University of Texas at El Paso. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Psychological & Behavioral Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She was awarded an APA Division 41 Early Career Professional Grant to qualitatively examine re-entry barriers in rural areas with limited infrastructural supports and was a recipient of the APA Div. 18 Criminal Justice Section Early Career Achievement Award. She serves as the APA Div. 41 Corrections Committee co-chair and is a member of the APA Div. 41 Science Impact and Communication committee. Her research focuses on re-entry barriers, implementation in correctional settings, rehabilitation and assessment for subgroups of justice-involved persons, and translation of research into practice.
Dr. Kois is a clinical and forensic psychologist whose research, clinical, and consulting activities center on forensic mental health services and systems, specifically those concerning competence to stand trial and the "competence crisis," as well as mental state at the time of the offense (i.e., sanity) evaluations. Her research program is supported by competitive federal, state, and philanthropic funding. In 2023 she received the Saleem Shah Early Career Development Award from the American Psychology-Law Society (APA Div. 41) and American Academy of Forensic Psychology, as well as the Psychologist in Public Service (APA Div. 18) Criminal Justice Division's Early Career Achievement Award. Prior to joining ILPPP, Dr. Kois was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology (Clinical Forensic doctoral program) at the University of Alabama.
